Problem Posing Assignment

Chosen place: Greenhouse - a building (usually made of glass) used to grow plants and often used to sell them as well.

Problem: Large greenhouse businesses are often very concerned with making profit and keeping up with the business aspect of things, they put less attention into realizing their impact on the environment in a negative way.

Question: Why do they feel that it is necessary to  have paved floors and parking lot? Having this on the ground contradicts the idea of having plants and helping them flourish. Paved grounds kill and prevent any life (plant or animal) that was previously or could potentially live there.

Why this is a significant problem: A greenhouse should set a complete and positive example for environmentalism and caring for the earth.

Final - Green House Holiday

Post Card 1: Beauty and Repetition

With the inspiration of Tom Bamberger, to modify an image is to make it more beautiful and more true. In my eyes, making a greenhouse more beautiful would include making it more environmentally friendly and overall have less impact on the planet as a facility (regardless of what is sold). To do so, I took out the ceiling of the green house to open the plants to a more natural environment. I took away the paved walkways too, for they restrict new growth or life with cement. The cow was added to show that a greenhouse could be somewhere that people and animals could enjoy together, more like a park rather than a prosperous facility that sells plants in mass quantities. Repetition is shown naturally through that rows of plants and the multitude of clouds.

Post Card 2: Fantasy

With inspiration from Sandy Skoglund, a misty fantasy has been created. I an close up image of some potted plant and turned it into a dreamy adventure in the woods! The "moonlight" shows through casting shadow on the abandoned fire pit. With the fog rolling in and the fire flies abundant, who knows what could happen next!

Post Card 3: Text

With Jenny Holzer and Barbara Kruger as inspiration, this third post card was intended to enhance the intentions for the image using text. This helps the viewer realize that life is short and that everyone should take time to smell the flowers and enjoy the little things in life.

Working with the history paint tool and filters.

Learning to use masking!

Practicing making specific selections

To create this image, I used the background eraser tool for the models hair and the horse body, I used the clone stamp tool to merge the model and the horse together. I edited the background image colors and then added a gradient overlay on the background layer. I enjoyed learning how to use the background eraser tool.

Comments

  1. Pictures were simple but effective. I really like the second one, the mini campfire was a good touch. The cow pieces nature together with the animal kingdom very well.

  2. I really like your Postcard 2 fantasy. I think that your idea behind making a forest out of potted plants is very interesting and fantasy like. I really enjoy the dark color scheme of the image which is then involved with a small bright fire. Very effective and intriguing.

  3. I think the first photo with repetition is very well done. The repetition of the potted plants into the horizon is interesting and creates a fantastical sense of scale. The replacement of the pavement with more nature and wildlife really helps to empathize your solution to the problem that you've posed.

  4. Your postcards are so believable. I really love the first postcard and how vivid it is. The idea is very unique and I appreciate your realistic color scheme.

  5. The second postcard is my personal favorite. The thing that really separates from the rest is the perspective and size comparison between the fire pit and the rest of the composition. The blurring and tilt shift that you applied to the bottom of the image really adds to the effect.

  6. I love the 2nd postcard and your idea of an adventure/mini forest in a greenhouse. Very good job conveying a sense of darkness/night time and mysteriousness with the fog. Successfully created a fantasy like effect and intrigued me to look at it closer.

  10. The text choice and the objects that are placed into each postcard tell the story of your concept effectively. The color of the postcard backs match the fronts nicely as well.

  11. The second postcard is my favorite. Its very miniature and dainty, the foreground blurring enhances the mystical aspects of the picture. The smoke also looks very realistic. Good job Danert.
